Star Trek: Into Darkness

Aaaah... I am content. I just saw Star Trek: Into Darkness an hour ago, and the world is good. I've been wary of the 2013 movie season after the abysmal A Good Day to Die Hard, but now... things are looking up.

In fact, if it weren't for the aforementioned travesty, 2013 could be shaping up to be the year of spectacular sequels. Iron Man 3 was great, and there are several more sequels coming out later in the summer (The Hangover Part III, anyone?), but today was a day that will live forever. Because the new Star Trek movie is easily one of the best that the franchise has ever produced.

Paying epic homage to the best Trek film of all time (1982's The Wrath of Khan), Darkness introduces a new villain-- who is later revealed to be the younger version of Ricarado Montalban's Khan from the Original Series. In this film, Khan is once again trying to save the lives of his crew, who have remained frozen in capsules after the Eugenics War. Khan, of course, is a superman who has been genetically engineered to possess enhanced intelligence, strength, stamina, and healing powers.

An evil Starfleet captain finds Khan's pods, and revives only him, in order to orchestrate a war with the Klingons (who no longer look like the heavily makeup-clad humans of old) in order to try out some new fancy weapons. Khan, being the badass he is, had his own plans, and smuggled his crew away using the torpedoes that the captain had him build. Here's where Kirk, Spock, Bones, and the rest of the peeps come in: After several terrorist attacks are staged, they chase Khan to the Klingon homeworld, violating the Neutral Zone (and thereby laying the grounds for war). Unknowingly, Kirk captures Khan, and the two are forced to team up to defeat the evil captain.

As is with any science fiction movie, the visuals often run the risk of overshadowing the plot and characters, a little more so here than in 2009's Star Trek. I think there are about five climactic battles. But fortunately, the witty banter that has made this franchise endure is still there. Uhura and Spock have a few spats, which is fun to watch, seeing as he can't really get pissed off. Scotty resigns his post, but returns to save the day in spectacular fashion. And Kirk gets to live through the EXACT SAME sequence from The Wrath of Khan, but this time it's him behind the glass. I won't get into it, as it would spoil the entire film... but this is really required viewing.

Also, there's an epic tribble cameo in the film, just to appease the die-hard fanboys who would get all butthurt if it didn't make little nods of the head to the Original Series.

Of course, Benedict Cumerbatch isn't quite able to live up to the big shoes left behind by the original Khan, but that's to be expected. The rest of the cast performs admirably, but the finest moments of the movie are when the characters are experiencing their own little interpersonal crises, not battling atop flying forklifts or running around active volcanoes. And yes, there's a healthy amount of lens flare, as always.

So, where does Darkness rank in the Trek filmography? Well, nothing will ever topple Khan from its sacred position as the height of the saga, and it's certainly not as good as Star Trek, the fantastic reboot that, although featuring the same characters as Darkness, was a lot fresher and more exciting. But I would put Darkness in third place easily, perhaps tied with The Voyage Home. F**k The Next Generation, Jean-Luc Picard is a pain in the ass.

And the final score for Into Darkness? 9/10 stars. Sure, I could bitch and moan about how much it screwed with the timeline of the Original Series by killing of not one, not two, but THREE characters who were integral to the storyline. I won't spoil it. Just go see this movie now, before we're bogged down in the inevitable slog of unintelligent shoot-em-up summer blockbusters.

Bye!

Serenity Now

IF YOU WANT TO HEAR SOMETHING AMAZING, KEEP READING. Are you still here? Good. I thought you looked smart. So, here it is--- get ready--- tension building--- adrenaline flowing--- PREPARE YOUR MIND TO BE BLOWN---

A new deep space program involves sending 'Firefly-class' spacecraft to mine nearby asteroids. Yeah, FIREFLY-class. Ringing any bells, Joss Whedon fans? Firefly, of course, is the short-lived but much loved TV series that was cancelled after only 14 episodes. And it's named for the Firefly-class starships, one of which (the Serenity) is the show's Millennium Falcon. Also, watch Firefly and the movie adaptation, Serenity. They're awesome.

But now is not the time to tell you about the great filmography of Joss Whedon (who also directed The Avengers, just sayin'). Because today, another school shooting in Georgia left one person dead. My gun death tally counter is at 1,479 so far, counting this one today. And it'll just keep rising.

If you look back, you'll see that my past... eight blog posts have all included the phrase "There was another shooting today." It's become the Osama Bin Laden of news--- the big story that everyone gets sick of in a few minutes but you can't read or watch any news without hearing about it. For instance, I haven't mentioned anything recently about Chuck Hagel's confirmation hearings, or North Korea's most recent direct threat to the United States, or the wildfires that have been raging across Australia for the past month.

Australia: The only continent where bird watching is a full-contact sport.

But in all cerealness, there's been a major shooting every day this year so far. Check that link from yesterday, not a SINGLE day has gone by. And the senate probably won't pass any new gun laws for six months, so... expect more of the same.

Let's end on a high note: JJ Abrams has been officially selected as the director of Star Wars: Episode VII: Sith Happens. I'm speculating on the title, but you get the point. We could also call it The Han-Over, or Gungan Style, or The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Sand-People. I'm getting off-message. Abrams, as you probably recall, is the director of the new Star Trek movie and its sequel, coming out this year. So yes, he's a busy guy. My prediction for Episode VII is that all the main characters will crash on a remote island on a remote planet, and have to fight for their lives to escape the evil demon smog-monster alien thing...

But again, I'm just speculating. Bye!

Four Score and Seven Years from Now...

Something amazing has happened: I have been visited by my future self. He's gone now, but I secretly recorded our conversation so that I could publish it here. Here's the transcript.
Me: Woah, who are you?
Future Me: I'm you.
Me: Is this, like, a Spock moment?
Future Me: Yeah, that's right. I'm you from the future.
Me: Well, that's intense.
Future Me: Yeah...
Me: Want a cheeto?
FM: Sure. We don't have those anymore where I come from.
Me: Did the government outlaw them?
FM: No, we just ran out of actual cheese. The new artificial kind is awful.
Me: So, what time are you from?
FM: 2098.
Me: You look like you're 20 years old!!!
FM: Well, using artificial age retention, you can live an extra 60 years!
Me: Oh... So, what's life like 80 years from now?
FM: Here's a current map of the world. Did you know that Canada was once its own country, with its own system of government and everything?
Me: Yeah, that's the way it is now. Why is California its own country?
FM: In order for the US to have a nice even 60 stars on the flag, they granted California independence.
Me: What happened with South America there?
FM: Paraguay and Uruguay went to war over which one was 'guayer'.
Me: So, what do I become when I grow up? Cartoonist? Bounty Hunter? CEO?
FM: A janitor at the self-tying shoelace plant.
Me: Oh...
FM: Gotta go! Time travel is illegal, but I just wanted to warn you: Don't call your house 20 times today telling your parents to buy you an X-Box. They won't be happy.
Me: Too late. Come back five hours ago.
FM: Damn. (Space-time portal opens, out steps android).
FM: Wait! No!
Android: TIME TRAVEL IS ILLEGAL (zaps future me into small pile of dust).
Me: 'Sup.
Android: SEE YA (leaves).
Me: WTF!!!
Anyway, that's the whole transcript.
Bye!

The brain tickler and the crazed Suits

PART #DOS: I hate doing two blogs on the same day, but I just realized that I never gave out the new brain tickler, so here it is: SPECTRUM. It's actually very simple.
I was reading the autobiography of William Shatner, and happened upon something VERY funny.
The NBC suits were reading over the scripts for a Star Trek episode called "A Private Little War", and as a suggestion, one of them wrote, and I quote:
'Please ensure that the Mugatu's appearance is not grotesque or shocking to the viewer'.
Gotta love dem suits.

Totally Trekked

HUZZAH! We saw the Star Trek movie again! It was just as good the second time around. This makes only the second movie that I have deemed good enough to see twice, the other being the "Incredibles", which I now despise. I have an interesting thing to tell you: I have a cat. This you do not already know, because I have never mentioned this in any other blog. I just thought of this today, on another infamous hike. I shall, however, spare you the monotony of seeing the pictures of it. I have some games to recommend:
Tanks
Asteroids
Pacman
Fancy Pants Man (yes, you read it right)
Lego Star Wars II (you have to buy this one)
Space Invaders
I hid the brain tickler's answer in the previous blog, so find it if you want it!
Here are some Star Trek episodes I recommend:
The Tholian Web
The Trouble With Tribbles
The City on the Edge of Forever
This Side of Paradise
The Menagerie, parts 1 and 2.
The Doomsday Machine
The Devil in the Dark (Shatner's favorite episode!!! :0 wow).
The Gamsters of Triskilion
Shore Leave
Operation: Annihilate!
Amok Time
The Mark of Gideon
All Our Yesterdays
Court Martial
Wink of an Eye
Day of the Dove
For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky
Let This Be Your Last Battlefield
The Enterprise Incident
Spectre the Gun
Return to Tomorrow
Patterns of Force
The Immunity Syndrome
I, Mudd
Mirror, Mirror
Dagger of the Mind
The Deadly Years
Naked Time
The Enemy Within

The Corbomite Maneuver

The Man Trap
Where No Man Has Gone Before
Miri
Turnabout Intruder
And the worst ever goes to...... Spock's Brain! (REALLY REALLY REALLY DON'T WATCH THIS)!
All the others are in between.

Links, Trekkies, and Potted Palms

Helllllllllllllllooooo, everyone!!!!!!!! Well, this weekend was pretty cool, with Mother's day and such. This year's Mother's day was actually fun because we bought a potted palm for mom! It has a very interesting pot. Also, I shall be trying to upload some pics of my cat, P-nut, onto this blog, but our digital camera's picture files are still on an old flash drive.
I presently have some thingimajigs to recommend, so I have devised a list of some very cool sites and videos.
hppt://unclejayexplains.com, a site about a political satirist who pretends to be talking to little kids.
wookieepedia, the star wars wiki.
comics.com, where you can access any comic strip over any time period.
joost.com and hulu.com, two sites where you can watch ANY TV show that's still running. Hulu has ads and Joost doesn't, but you can only get The Simpsons on Hulu. (You can, however, access Star Trek episodes on both!)
I also must say that me and a friend of mine went to see the new Star Trek movie: 10/10 stars!!! We forgot to get nachos while there, unfortunately, but I finished off my entire giant kit-kat! I especially enjoyed the part where they spacejumped onto the planet-killing ship's drill. But when Vulcan was (EERTERTERT BIG SPOILER ALERT!!!!) destroyed, it ruined a LOT of the plotlines for the original series. SPOCK ROCKS & HE'S DEAD, JIM!!!! Plus there's some great clips on YouTube featuring Bones saying either "He's dead, Jim", or "I'm a doctor, not a ______". (maybe he could say "I'm a doctor, not a waffle iron"). Thanks for reading!!!

the estbay comic strip everay!!!

I know that on Tuesday I said that I was going to reveal the greatest (and worst) comic strips ever. But I decided that this might insult a regular old Garfield fan (as you may have guessed, Garfield is NOT the best strip). So I decided to reveal them in igpay atinlay (pig latin). The greatest ever is earlspay eforebay inesway by ephanStay astisPay, while the worst is ethey amilyfay ircuiscay by illBay eanKay. Alsoay, the new arStay eckTray oviemay is coming out tomorrow, so be sure to wear (as I'm sure Bones would say) your "vulcan ears, Jim". Unfortunately, DeForest Kelley, the guy who played Bones, is dead, Jim. Orrysay, no pics today, but Amazon.com has some ookbays of earlspay eforebay inesway, so check that out. Also, Toys R Us has some WONDERFUL talking ockSpay obbleheadsbay. Anksthay orfay eadingray!!!

NACHOS. NACHOS. NACHOS.
